I was slightly surprised to note the term in a NY Times article this morning, and apparently there's even a freegan.info (started four years ago). Apparently in this iteration, freegans are anticonsumerists, and are scavenging for most everything instead of purchasing them because they don't believe in capitalistic values. A bit extreme for my tastes (they talking about eating food out of dumpsters), but to each their own . . .
