When my brother was in grad school in Illinois in 2003 or so, I remember visiting him and meeting his friend Damon. Damon introduced me to the term "freegan," as they were discussing events that had free pizza. So, instead of being a vegan, Damon claimed to be a freegan, getting all the free food he could.

I was slightly surprised to note the term in a NY Times article this morning, and apparently there's even a (started four years ago). Apparently in this iteration, freegans are anticonsumerists, and are scavenging for most everything instead of purchasing them because they don't believe in capitalistic values. A bit extreme for my tastes (they talking about eating food out of dumpsters), but to each their own . . .
