Crucifixion for all!

So, I heard a story on NPR about how they re-enact the crucifixion of Christ every year. They talked about a guy who was going through his 21st reenactment.

Anyway, the story mentioned how they use alcohol to clean the nails. Being the maccabre kind of person I am, my first thought was how real is this? Do the nails go through the palm or the wrist? I was thinking it couldn't be the wrist, especially if this guy is going through his 21st. So google to the rescue! From these pictures from this old BBC story, it's apparently through the palm of the hand, and then they have straps on their arms to help support their body weight. This video show's what they do to the feet - looks like it's done close to the toes, where the tarsals would be further spread apart. Crazy though . . .

The Catholic church apparently disapproves of this, but it's amazing what people will do in the name of "faith" . . .
