Friday the 13th

So, let's see, what did I do today?

I slept in till around 9, messed around till about 10:30 or so, before Justin and I went down to snowboard at Bridger. I'd never been before, and today was $10 lift tickets in celebration of their 6th anniversary, so I figured I might as well go. Had a nice time that reminded me of Robin.

Justin and I get back into town around 9, and I meet up with a crowd at Mackenzie River, before rolling on out to Silver City. Hang out there for a while, play some pool, observe some drama, whatever, before rolling back into town around 1:00.

I get home, and am doing some e-mail and things, and notice that my computer is acting a bit slow. Doing a bit of research, it seems there are some rogue perl scripts running. A bit more research, and it seems that someone used a phpBB exploit and got the scripts on there. I was going to upgrade phpBB, when I find out that Gentoo has it hardmasked due to the many exploits. So, I just finished uninstalling it, as the group I had set it up for isn't using it anymore. I still have the tables, so I'm sure if I ever really need the data, I can get it.

Let's hope that's enough to stop anyone from making my computer into a zombie . . .

Good Discover

I'm pretty pleased with my Discover card. They're online services are the best of any of the financial services I've used before, and they have lots of little things that please me as a customer (I can get new card designs at no cost, one-time use numbers for online transactions, cash back, easy online payments, etc).

The one time I've had an issue is when I was online one day, updated my address from Ohio to Montana, and then requested a new card. They sent the new card to Ohio, and I didn't get it, so I called wondering what had happened. They ended up having to cancel the account so that card wouldn't get used, so I had to get a new card. To their benefit, they sent the card for the new account express through DHL, and I got it on a Saturday morning. (Oh, and my credit limit is a bit irksome.)

Anyway, the reason for my praise now is that I just received a letter from their fraud protection unit, saying they tried to call but had no luck, so I should give them a call back. I call, and find out they still had my parents' number on the account, so I update that. She then verifies my past transactions, starting with the laptop I bought earlier this week (I charged part of it to my Discover), and then transactions since then, which included Bresnan, Real Food, Fuddruckers for dinner last night. Apparently charging close to $1000 on my card set off thier fraud protection algorithim.

I'm guessing I didn't trigger the one for my bank debit card because I use that account to pay my Discover bill, so a large purchase on their isn't unusual (though my credit card bill last month was huge since I had bought my ski pass and plane tickets on it - I wonder if it didn't trigger because they've got it programmed to include holiday flux?)

Silly Rae

I had a silly observation made to me last night. Rae, one of the last VISTAs I recruited while I was a Leader, was saying she felt guilty because everytime I saw her, she was out drinking. (She's from Polson, so who knows how often she's in Helena.)

For some reason she didn't realize the comment was a double-edged blade - maybe I should have been the one concerned since she only saw me at bars. She was slightly worried, in a joking manner, that I might say something to Vicki. As if Vicki doesn't know that VISTAs tend to drink a bit . . .
