buzzed, B&W

Tech stuff, quotes, and fortunes . . .

Hmm . . . so Tony sent me his old router since mine wasn't working. While it seems to work reasonably well, for some reason I can't get it to let my system have a consistent IP. The D-Link was nice in that it let me hard-code certain MAC addresses to IP addresses while using DHCP. While this isn't built into the Linksys, I figured the computer would just renew the same IP each time. That wasn't working, as it would get addresses ending in 100, then 101, and then 103 . . . no idea why. Anyway, I set the computer up to use a static IP, assigning it 50, but for some reason, today it's got an address of 101. If this doesn't work, I might have to explore upgrading the firmware, or disable DHCP.

I was reminded of one of my favorite quotations today, It's sometimes referred to as Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Lastly, while my parents were in town we had very mediocre Chinese at the Jade Garden. The highlight of the meal for me was the fortune cookies. I'm very much a fan of the silly little joke where you add "in bed" to the end of the fortune (which is much better than adding "between the sheets" as some of my aquaintances tend to do.) The three fortunes were:
  • It is imposible to please everybody. Please yourself first.
  • Don't allow yourself to dream away time - be productive.
  • The smart thing is to prepare for the unexpected.
Silly? Absolutley . . . but it did make me smile.

Snowboarding and movies

Man, I'm itching for snow now that I have gear . . .

They're showing Warren Miller's Higher Ground on Thursday night, but I doubt I'll see it as that's also the first night of indoor. Even though the indoor is on a synthetic gym floor, I think I'll pick doing something active over watching a crazy movie.

Speaking of movies though, there are a surprisingly high number of films on my radar right now: Rent, the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Shopgirl (which may never make it here to Helena), Good Night, and Good Luck (again, may never make it to Helena), the new Harry Potter, and I'm sure there are others that I don't even know of.
