Gentoo frustration

Argh, I'm having trouble with the bootstrap process for my Gentoo install. My brother gave me his old K6-2 500, so I'm basing my system around that and a new HDD I bought. Anyway, during the compile, I get an error saying it's probably a hardware error or something. I'm trying it now with CFLAGS="-mcpu=k6 -O0 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" That's no optimizations, and a pretty generic cpu option. (k6-2 is also an option.) I'm not sure what I should try next. I could try underclocking for system stability, or I could see if a stage2 gentoo install works better . . .

?
